BW1356 question regarding shift arm

I recently bought a used BW1356.. I've never worked on these before. The external shift lever is stuck/doesn't move by hand. I've managed to get it to move a little via light tapping/lube. I've opened the case and am looking at the pawl that actuates the shifting fork mechanism but it is really stuck. I can't move the external shift arm at all by hand. i got a little movement in it but I don't want to mess things up. I had to heat the bolt to get the short shift lever off. Anyway, sorry if I'm not describing this in technical terms but do I need to take apart the entire case to free this up?

Haven't heard from anyone but i hit the case with some gentle heat from the rose bud and boy did that free up the shift lever, of course the seal is gone but that shaft must have been rust locked. Now it shifts easily and the pawl actuates the clutch levers. So i guess I'm looking at a full rebuild kit How do you tell if bearings are bad. i guess you just replace them.

what happens is the grease in the shifter gets gummed up and than the shifter will not move. the reason it now works is the heat loosened up the grease.
remove the shifter and take it apart and thoroughly clean it. regrease it and put it all back together.
lack of use is the killer of 4X4 shifters.

Thanks for insight; makes sense. I'm on my way to a semi-full rebuild. Not sure if i need to replace the pump but I'm doing the bearings and seals for sure. Thx

if you are taking it apart, check EVERYTHING.
i lost the 1356 in my 88 diesel 25 miles from the shop when the pump broke and destroyed the case.....with a 73 cougar convertible on the trailer i was towing.
locked up tight and put me in a ditch on the side of the road.
lucky for me there was no real damage except for the exploded t-case and flat spots on the back tires from sliding across the asphalt.
