Pretty common in the day. they vibrated good enough it was like the mirror was out of focus if you extended them much.
If extended out, they really needed a third leg to steady them .... like a third leg attached to the mirror base bolt / stud and extending forward to the door's leading edge, with a flat metal hook with rubber cushion maybe, to hold the mirror steadier against the wind.
