Cylinders Deactivation

Has anyone tried to run on five cylinders with injectors unplugged on a v10? Like every other cylinder in the firing order.. just wondering if you would get any MPG out of it.. might try it on an up coming trip...

Yeah looking at the firing order evey other one would be only run one side of block. So thinking running it on six cylinders- fire 5-10, skip 2-7, fire 3-8, skip 4, fire 9-1 skip 6 and repeat.

Probably would vibrate like absolutely crazy and need to be in first gear to climb any hill at all. If you want to save fuel put a wood block behind the gas pedal.

Yeah i abandoned the idea. It actually didnt run bad with six cylinders.. it had enough power to drive 80mph in overdrive but did downshift more.. i wasnt too comfortable to run it long so tried with 2 and 9 deactivated.. this vibrated as much as four deactivated..
The mpg was the same as all cylinders but it spent more time out of overdrive.

Unsurprising. The amount of energy (fuel) and power (fuel flow rate) is the same to do the same thing (climb the same hill, accelerate to 60 in the same period, etc) given the same weight. If you reduce the number of cylinders you just make the others have to work harder to do that same task and burn the same fuel.
