Do I need a fan shroud.

First post. I have a 1967 F100 with a 352, 3 speed manual transmission and no A/C. Mostly stock from what I can tell, except that I was told the previous owner has put a small cam in it. I have no idea what size cam or what a cam does. It also has dual exhaust and I assume that is not stock as well. It runs and sounds pretty good, no smoke or leaking. My first task was to get it running, it had been setting for over 5 years. Rebuilt the carb, replaced plugs and wires, and it cranks right up. It sounds pretty good with the cam.

I friend suggested I install a fan shroud. I do not believe it came stock with one and question if it is a necessary expense. I have not ran it long, but have ran it long enough for the thermostat to open and it does not seem to be running hot. It has not been on the road yet. I live on a mountain and need the brakes done before I chance driving it far.

Will a fan shroud help or hurt and do I need one at all?

Thanks in advance.

PS. I have found this forum to be much more helpful and not as critical as some F100 Facebook groups.

Fan shroud

My 68/ 360 manual non ac came with no shroud. Even after I converted to a 460 it still cooled enough.
If you want to quiet it down then a fan shroud with a viscous style fan clutch will also remove some parasitic drag

The fan shroud does make a difference. My 70 had and will have a fan shroud, actually found a Ford one in one piece.

Here is a thread to read it is short with part numbers from ND the parts guru. Need a fan Shroud - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums (ford-trucks.com)
A lot of these trucks never had a shroud and never ran hot. I don't have a shroud, but no AC and it never runs hot. If you get it driving and it runs normal temps don't bother with the expense.

I have a 67 F100 Ranger 352, no AC, 3 speed manual, original radiator. No fan shroud. I only drive it in the summer, and not a lot really, but It does not run hot. I wasn't confident about my in dash temp gauge, which went to about 3/4 hot quickly and stayed there. I replaced the sender, and no change so I put in an AutoGage temp gauge with their sensor, and it has never exceed 200, and most of the time sits at 190. I couldn't find a shroud to fit my truck without some modification or fabrication, so I don't have one. I have had the truck for 6 years. I capped the sender wire to the original gauge in place so I can put the stock sensor back and connect the gauge to get back to original.

Run it and find out!

Neither my '67, nor my '68, came with a shroud (both are non-A/C trucks), and despite both of them being "hopped-up" a little with a cam and carb (I bought them this way), neither of them overheat.

As a Commercial HVAC Service Tech, I think the fan shroud on A/C equipped trucks was used/needed more for the A/C condenser than the radiator. But that's just my opinion, of course.

Gentlemen.

Thanks for all the responses. Once I get it on the road, I may run it a while and see how it performs without and then make a decision. I found one on the Dennis Carpenter website that looks like it may bolt up with minimal modifications.

You probably don't need it. It can't hurt though and it might save your fingers

Just to add to this a little the 80 - 86 trucks with a 300 six (dont know of thev8's?) and no AC did not come with a shroud only the AC truck did and would have to say Jim K nailed it "to pull air thru the condenser".
I have AC so I have a shroud.

I also have a small body v8 car from the factory, non AC, that did not come with a shroud.
Fan sits maybe 2 inches from the core but I had over heating issues.
I added a shroud and it did help but there was issues with the motor and why it over heated.

So based on that a shroud can not hurt as someone posted.
There is a good video on YouTube on how to make shroud as he shows it for a roundy round race stock car.
