General ICM Question for Ford 302s
I've got an old 1989 E-250. Bought it with a handful of problems for a good deal a few years ago, blew a head gasket and took the time to do a lot of work along the way when replacing the head gasket.
Somewhere along the lines I developed some rough drivability issues. Found previous owner removed fuse that showed check engine light. Worked though a host of codes and now have no codes thrown!
One issue I would like to get to the bottom of is an intermittent ICM issue I believe. A few times while driving, the van would run extra rough. Then just suddenly shutoff. This seems to correspond to warmer outdoor temperatures which leads me to believe the ICM is intermittently failing.
Following the last time this happened, I ordered a new ICM Motorcraft DY 1284.
I was able to get things working with this new ICM, but found that the van would now just completely die every time after a few minutes of running. Attempting to start the van would result in no firing at all. If I would turn the key back to the fully off position, then attempt to start, that would work every time to start the engine again. This also threw a code that indicated SPOUT disconnected which cleared up after switching back to other ICM.
After this I found some additional info on these forums and online regarding the different types of ICM modules.
One important note is that the previous owner claimed this van had a new remaned engine. I believe this is true due to a lot of various cables and plugs disconnected due to various mis-matches. also the AC compressor and equipment is missing and heater core disconnected. I do not know what year the engine is though.
After learning this ICM info, I purchased another ICM of CCD type which was a Motorcraft DY1077. This turned out to be a mistake as well since it is a remote mount replacement.
My question is, is there any way to determine exactly which model ICM I need? I see there are some different models depending on the vehicle, year, push/CCD, remote/dist mount.
Unfortunately my current ICM seems like a cheap aftermarket replacement as there is no text or identifiers on it. It is black, but im not so sure that helps me.
Is it possible the DY 1284 is what I need and just received a faulty one which seems a common problem?
Thanks in advance!
Many people do switch to an remote mount TFI module to make it last longer
The distributor mounted ones overheat and fail quicker
Have you replaced the stator (pickup) in the distributor? That stator provides the pip signal and they do also fail quite regularly
If you have jumped through those hoops already the capacitors in your processor ECM need to be checked and the condition of the printed circuit board
BTW Fords ECM capacitors fail after 10 years, it often damages the traces in the board, best open it and check it, be ready to replace it, mine cost $800, rare code.

I have checked and believe I found the stator to be functional. I will also investigate the ECM. I have some experience and the tools for repairing circuit boards. I imagine I can find some more info on these computers online.
Is it possible for me to confirm that I should have the DY 425 in any way? Just since it is not the original engine and the current TFI is an aftermarket black one.
I will probably also do the remote mount just because once I get the replacement.
Thanks again! Glad van has been running fine so far, hopefully pointing more to the TFI since weather has been cooler and I redid the old crusty thermal paste
