I recently drove the truck for the first time. I went to shift the truck to second gear, and shift started moving up and down freely. The truck is still in first gear. I think it’s in the column, but I can’t figure out what it should look like if it wasn’t broken.
Any direction or advice would be greatly appreciated. I’m a little discouraged.
I'll bet your looking at the wrong end of the column... Check the bottom. You should be able to manually slip the two levers, at the bottom to center. But the ultimate solution is a complete rebuild of the column shifter assembly.
I'll see if I can hunt down a link that gives you the whole process...

See the small tube on the side of the column. You should be able to slide a drill bit or large wire thru that alignment tube and both shift arms when they are centered. The lever in the cab should also center when this is done.. if the lever in the cab is not centered when this is done, the shift tube has failed ( extreme ware) or (less likely) the lever has sheared where it enters the shift tube.

Top photo is my truck. Bottom photo is a rebuilt one. I know I need to do some repairs on the steering column. I don’t know how, but like the rest of the truck, I’ll figure it out. Any tips?
There is a tab on the shift tube and your shift collar has a notch in it that fits to the tab on the shift. Pull the steering wheel and take a look at the shift tube. Had this happen to me years ago and the tab had broken loose from the tube.
It also looks like the white plastic spacer? between the 2 shifter arms is gone.
This would also let the arms move all over so the tab will not hit the slot right.
I think the whole thing needs to come out, cleaned up and looked over for when is worn / broken / missing.
Then you will be speed shifting in no time

I think you're right! I have started to remove what I think is everything needed. I'm currently at the point of removing the steering shaft. I'm hoping that is all I need to remove. I just need to figure out how.
Also check where the linkage rods connect to the shift levers on the side of the transmission. Maybe a clip has come off, and the rod is flopping around.

They seem to be ok. I’ve been able to shift it out of gear in order to move it.
