Did some searching on this but I may have come to the wrong conclusion on my grease choice. I pulled the cable out and everything looks to be in great shape. I was wondering what grease everyone recommends to get this shaking to stop? I used the white lithium grease spray after searching on here, but the stuff just seemed thin to me. May be why it's shaking around so bad. Have a video here for reference. Let me know what your recommendations are to still this thing up a bit.
Always used vaseline, and it's compatible with the Trans fluid if it should make its way into the transmission. Could be something wrong with the cable, or gears on either end also cause it to be jumpy.
The speedometer is new, caue the original was chewed up and the needle missing. The gear at the transfer case looked fine. I had taken apart the speedometer cable and it looked excellent conditionwise. I cleaned it and hit it with the spray on white lithium grease which made go from just being jumpy at 0-10mph to jumpy all the time. I think I used the wrong grease. Will pull it out and see if we have some vaseline somwhere around the house.
Before you put it all back together, get a helper to watch the speedo while you "run-up" the cable with a variable speed drill, connected either to the cable itself, or the transmission gear, underneath the truck. Start out slow, and increase the speed slowly and steadily.
Unfortunately I don’t have a helper here in Vegas. I Vaselined the crap out of this thing and it got a tiny tiny bit better. I feel like the vaseline is not getting inside the housing it’s just coming off as I push this thing in. It rotated freely by hand though. It was pretty bone dry when I took it out. The white lithium I had sprayed on all but disappeared. The routing is pretty straight with the only bends being coming up to the speedometer housing and at the speedometer gear. Is there a trick packing the Vaseline into the cable housing? I have some photos of the only real bend in it below.
What I remember is factory recommended is a graphite based lube , or maybe straight graphite . I think Carpenters used to sell the stuff for 9 ,10 , 11 dollars.........

Both of mine are 2WD, so obviously there's no transfer case. Can't say I've ever paid attention to the routing on either of mine, but that bend in yours looks a little severe to me....
As for lube, I think the factory used some sort of graphite, but I'm not certain. However, I do have the factory service manuals ('67 and '68), and I can look it up for you if you think it will help. Just let me know.
I got in the truck the other day and it was suddenly significantly better but still shaking through the whole range. Got it still at 40mph for a minute there too out of nowhere. I should've paid attention to how the cable was routed before I took it out. I saw those holes in the crossmember and thought what a great place to route this. That may be my issue. I will reroute to minimize the bend there and see if that resolves it. If anyone has insight on how it was routed from the factory or photos, it is very much appreciated.
I rerouted it and minimized the bend. Didn't change it. The truck is slowly getting smoother as it has been sitting. I don't know if the vaseline is working its way through the shaft or what. I will have to play with this as the cable, gear, and housing are in great condition.

I did much research on this subject as I do on most everything . Grease & oil clogs & piles up out of the way . Also metal cable/blade slings the grease off the cable inside the casing .
To the point , graphite , is the best from what I have studied, & I say that is why Carpenter sells it
Oh , grease supposedly can wick it way up the blade and into the cluster connector and ruin speedometer........
