So for a while now I have been attempting to track down a troublesome gremlin/Bugaboo... which has taken the form of extremely loud/noticeable hissing whenever I am accelerating from already being at a high speed (50mph+).
It almost sounds like the Wastegate/Turbo fart, but instead of being a couple seconds, the sound is constant.
The mind tends to immediately jump to boost leak... so in addition to buying some brand spankin' new Intercooler Pipes (old ones had misshapen ends), I also purchased/installed a new Y Collector/Up-Pipes (what a horrible, horrible job that was), the sound remains.
For All I know, this could be a completely normal sound, but I just can't shake the feeling that something is amiss... so I busted out my high tech microphone and did a little recording for y'all, so have a listen!
Charge air coolers go bad too. Just because you changed out the pipes doesn't mean you don't have a leak between them. The plenums can also leak. The boots and their clamps can have failures also. All of these are fairly easy to diagnose and find.
In addition to above inspect the turbo compressor wheel for contact with housing. A tiny bit of motion when pushing it around is ok but it too loose the wheel can make contact.
-EBPV was deleted by PO, installed the non-EBPV turbo pedestal as well
-Air filter is brand spanking new/spotless. AFE Big Boost with protective sock
-Using boost leak tester everything seems to be OK, plenums seem fine and also have the reinforcement rings in them as well.
-the only spot that I seem to have air coming from is where the red/green vacuum lines connect to the solenoid that's mounted on spider. I have a couple extra little rubber boots lying around that I might try instead..
And lastly, my truck seems to run properly until it reaches operating temp (so like any drive longer than 20 mins) then it just seems super sluggish/low on power.
No codes, naturally.
I have a major hiss that happens, if i am foot heavy, or towing, and under somewhere between 1800 and 1900 rpm. Above that the hiss goes away, and i have good power. Discussing with my tune writer. I was lugging the snot out of the poor girl, running my shift pattern to low. Now, instead of shifting at 2200 to 2400, i shift from 2500 to 2700, depending on conditions.
if you have an auto, and are tuned, perhaps your tune has the shifts occuring to soon?
Since it loses power after warming up try cooling the IPR. Pretty common failure mode. Use an upside down "can of air" or cool water to cool the IPR. Check the tin nut is tight on there.
If it runs better with a cold IPR, welp, there ya go.
