Then why does it often connect wirelessly on it's own when the phone has been set to forget Ford's modem and does not log in to it? I don't really have any reason to connect to the truck wifi.
SYNC 4 troubleshooting tips does indeed say to not connect to the vehicle's hotspot while using CarPlay. Maybe I could just turn wifi off on the phone if I'm in the truck to ensure no "accidental" connection even though the phone is set to forget the truck hotspot.
You could do that, but then wireless car play wouldn't work. You'd have to use usb cable. Just turn off the wifi in sync 4 to not broadcast would be my suggestion. I have zero issues with car play because I do not use truck wifi, I let the trial run out. I keep phone os updated and sync updated and it works flawlessly.

The Ford hotspot trial has long run out for me too. Phone is always on the latest iOS. SYNC is set to check for updates every night at 1 AM when the truck is in the garage right near my home wifi. But who knows if it ever updates properly?
Just go into your WiFi settings on your phone and click the truck network. Select forget. Or you can turn off the auto connect switch. Don’t turn WiFi off. Your truck initiates the connection with Bluetooth, but then switches to WiFi to display on your screen.

I did that several days ago. It seemed to work for a restart or two and then reverted back to randomly connecting or not. To the best of my knowledge the phone wifi setting still does not auto connect to the Ford hotspot.
Here's another question: if the truck wifi is turned off wouldn't that negate any FordPass operations like remote start via phone and automatic system updates? For what it's worth the last automatic update was 5.3.1 PowerUp back on Feb. 2.

I feel your pain Poncho, sometimes fixing app issues feels like herding cats. Back when I was an Android user I discovered that clearing an app's cache solved a lot of problems. But, I don't think you can do that on an iPhone. Have you tried uninstalling FordPass, restarting the phone, then reinstalling FordPass?

I actually use FordPass pretty seldom. It's the random connectivity with Apple CarPlay that drives me crazy. Lately I'm finding that if I shut the truck down with CarPlay still in operation it will come back on when I restart the truck. But that's just today so far. It always seems to be subject to change.
I have had my truck for 10 days now. Yesterday was the first time I ran into an issue with the iPhone/Car Play. After driving to a tile shop I came back to the truck and started it up the car play did not display on the screen (as if disconnected) but the truck started to play the pod cast i was listening to on Spotify through the speakers, however the only speaker sound was coming out of was the front passenger speaker. Seemed very odd. I grabbed the phone and forgot the Bluetooth connection to the truck and they re-synced the phone and started for work fine again. Anyone else have this happen?

Mine will drop car play now and then, the phone will show up on the screen, but the car play option is not available/working. This can be very aggravating when using it to navigate. there is about a 300 yard spot when heading out of town, where cell coverage drops (but picks right back up again) but not car play.... It's almost great, but not quite....
