Instrument Cluster Voltage Regulator

I have been working through and checking my instrument panel gauges and getting issues sorted out. I am going to be replacing instrument panel bulbs with LED's, mainly to get some more brightness. I am wondering if while I have the cluster out, should I bother replacing the ICVR. It appears to working fine based on how the gauges are operating, so should I leave sleeping dogs lie and not change it? If I were to change it are there any pros / cons between the solid state ones and the original bi-metal type?

I do not know , my opinion is solid state all the way...........if it is from a reputable dealer , look for reviews on the SS regulator , & working with LED's

Don't know about which one would work better, but since I had the instrument panel out when I installed the red, green and white LED lamps, I figured it would be worth it to go with a modern ICVR. So far, it sure is nice to see the improved lighting over the 56 year old lamps on my '68.

The difference between the original electromechanical IVR and the solid-state ones is the original IVR puts out 12V until it warms up, so the gauges react faster on startup. The solid-state ones put out a constant 5 V, so it takes the gauges a little longer to get where they are going.
If you change IVR's to either type always bench, check them before you install it. The solid-state ones are all made in China and can be DOA or putting out the wrong voltage.

When I had the cluster out in my '68 I replaced the IVR just as a matter of course. I mean, as long as you're in there....

evidently the IVR made Ford gauges work better than other companies , because other gauges did not have variable option

All the gauge systems, Ford, Chrysler and others are actually the King-Seeley system used up thru the 1970's and maybe later. It has been around forever. The original senders up to at least 1966 will have a stylized KS on them.
