I have a 96 F150 5.0 that I’m trying to manual swap. I know that I can use either the M5OD or the difficult to find ZF5( if anyone has one near the North Carolina area, LMK). My question is, what year range of these transmissions can I use? I vaguely remember seeing somewhere online that the 97-99 were different than the 96, so I wouldn’t be able to use the transmission from them. What’s the earliest to latest year I could use. I just want to make sure before I buy a transmission that won’t work and will just sit in my garage. Also, did they even make the 96 F150 5.0 in a manual? So many people keep telling me they never made one.
One of the issues to deal with is that the manual trucks in 95-96 were SD and the auto trans trucks were MAF so there is not a "correct" ECU you can use in your application unless you want to convert your truck to SD.
You can use a ZF5 from 88-97 F250 but only if it is for the 351W or 300 Six. 460 or diesel trans will not fit.

Would I need the ecu from a manual if I don’t plan on using cruise control or back up lights? I was gonna wire in led lights by switch. I was told the ecu would just throw codes about not getting signal from the transmission which could be fixed with an ecu tune
You can keep the auto ECU but as you state, it's going to give about 8 codes complaining about how the trans is not talking to it. It won't light the CEL over it, tho.

Do what? No reverse lights? Is this going to be an off road only vehicle? I don’t understand the infatuation people have with LED lights. I’ve had my pickup for 12 years and never replaced a light bulb.

How does OBD-II and probably MAF react to the lack of transmission inputs verses OBD -I?

I was told that if I didn’t have a manual ecu, and just kept the automatic, I wouldn’t be able to connect the wiring harness which would have the reverse signal to turn on the lights. It sounds outlandish but that’s what I was told
