Talking oil pressure

When I start my 2000 Ranger the oil pressure gauage reads low, and a dash light appears ( check-guage) after 1/2 mile or less the light turns off and the oil pressure is at the half way mark.
I recently had the oil changed and new filter, shop foreman indicated no leaks all seemed ok to him????.
Any ideas--oil sending unit possibly???
if so where is it located on the 3.0 L V6 engine

Evening.. after some research on this in the past I found that the Ranger has an oil pressure gauge that gives practically no info on actual oil pressure. I cannot remember the exact numbers but it is a gauge that is practically useless. Take an extra 3 mins in the morning or whenever and check the dipstick prior to starting.

It is true that the oil pressure gauge is a dummy gauge, and doesn't tell you much more than if the oil pressure is more than 0. However, just becuase the dipstick shows a good level of oil doesn't mean you can ignore this problem. I don't have the answer to your problem but don't just check the dipstick and call it goood

Welcome to FTE!!!

I would put a "real" gauge on it to make sure you have the correct pressure, if you do I would bet the sender is bad which is a common problem.

Welcome to FTE!!!!

I would say it's the sending unit "switch". It is screwed into the
block, just behind the head on the passenger's side....

Good luck, ....and have a safe, Happy Thanksgiving holiday!!!

I think I'm having the same problem. Pardon the stupid questions but here it goes:

1. If it's just a bad "switch", any problem driving it to the shop? Way too cold out to work on it right now.

2. Any quick/easy way to tell if it's a bad "switch" vs a bad sending unit (which I assume means no oil circulating = dead engine).

Thanks.

As a somewhat related topic... Anyone had their oil pressure guage start acting up? When it's decently cold outside (around freezing is the only time it's done it so far) My oil pressure guage will magically drop to zero and then come back... It's not a real (or even suspected) oil pressure condition, because the "Check Gauge" Light doesn't come on with it... It only lasts like 1/2 second or so too... Drop to zero, come right back up... Once things in the dash start warming up, it stops... Is there a way to just put a real oil pressure gauge on this thing?

To determine if its just a bad switch test the oil pressure with a real gauge, the valves would be very noisy if you had no pressure.

I have heard about a lot of odds things happening with the reading due to the sender. Check with Bob Ayers about replacing the switch sender with a real one.

Weird as it seems, I think the oil gauge was affected by the cold. On the day that it seemed dead, the temp had been in the single digits for 36 hours or so. Yesterday (sunday) it 'warmed' up to 35 degrees so I decided to have a look at the truck. Turned on the engine and the gauge popped right up to "normal". This has never happened in the 6 months that I've owned the truck but it's never been this cold either. Thanks for all the advice...now I know what to look for when it quits in the summer!
