The throttle cable between the carb and gas pedal broke yesterday, leaving me to get home at an idle.
it’s a stranded cable, so I guess one strand has been breaking every eight years, but it finally got down to the last strand and broke leaving me with only an idle fortunately I wasn’t too far from the house.
for $35 rock Auto had the replacement at my door two days later and was a 30 minute job to install it.
it might be time well spent feeling along the exposed portion of cable at the gas pedal so you don’t get stranded down the road The inner cable has been removed from the outer sheath The cable parted close to the gas pedal
Sorry, to hear that, I just checked NAPA. They will have one tomorrow if I needed one. But it's after 2pm. I'm sure if I ordered before 10am I might've had it the same day.
Sorry, I'm not a fan of ordering from some place a long way away.
I do remember back in the 1970's I carried a spare cable on my 340 Duster 4-speed, after having to use a shoelace in place of the broken cable. I also carried a spare U joint in the car. Had to change one of them on the roadside once.
Back in the day (20 years ago) I was driving a 91 F-150 on a 500km trip and that happened to me about halfway through it. I got lucky and was able to limp it to a small town gas station and call home, where we were able to find a replacement cable and eventually swap it. That wasn't fun.
What concerns me about these trucks with throttle cables is that that plastic on the inside of the spring seems to deteriorate and break away. So I find it on the trucks that I have three of them 86 models so I guess I could look into buying a throttle cable myself.
The accelerator cable on my 1985 Diesel was just the opposite; instead of breaking, it would hang up and not release = good it was a manual as I could just clutch it or put it in neutral to keep from running over things.
When I replaced it, I could never find one even close to the length of the original = all were several inches longer.
I have notes somewhere as to how I addressed this extra length.
As for the cable breaking, such times are when my Vernier-adjustable throttle cable come in real handy as I can drive using that if need be.
