For any future learners like myself, a follow up; I installed a new sender and the connector kept slipping off it since it's got a shorter stem than the last one, which got me to thinking... did it really ever connect properly with the last one? It stayed on but I can't swear it was tight enough to read. I squished the connector a little with pliers to make it a tighter squeeze and it slid on, stayed in place and the gauge works as it should. So silly but I couldn't tell before the new sender. Maybe the sender helped as well and might've still been the main problem but the connector likely wasn't connecting well enough either way.
