I purchased this and we'll be installing it soon .
My question is, it comes with the Donaldson P550943, its a 9 micron filter and it seems kind of a high number to me.
What is the current micron ?
I'm not sure you need to worry about the micron rating on that filter. Theoretically all the fuel that would be going thru it will have already been filtered twice (unless the cp4 grenades obviously), and anything that gets by it will be filtered by the factory system after it leaves the tank. That is IF I understand how these kits work correctly. I have one on my truck, but bought it that way and never fully investigated how the fuel is routed.

one on the engine bay filter ?
The original Gen 2 kit came with a SNAPP filter rated at 2 micron but now with the new testing standards it's probably 4 microns...
S&S damaged a 17 plus CP4 and drove it with the Gen 2.1 kit with the Donaldson filter and it saved the injectors so I wouldn't worry about the Donaldson filter micron rating at all. There's videos out on this by them.
There's three videos on the use of the Donaldson filter; Part 1, Part 2 and The Recap... here's part 1.
The Donaldson should be fine. Like Dave said, normally the return fuel is not filtered at all and it would be filtered again twice before going back to the CP4. The one thing I like about the SNAPP filter is the clear housing.

This what Jolly and I are referring to... this is the filter that the kit originally came out with... then Parker had issues keeping up with demand since the black housing is not available without the drain, only in white, so those 2 micron filters in black with no drain where specially made for S&S.
If you want to go nuts on a return filter, a Baldwin BF7696 is about as good as you are going to get 4 microns absolute (beta of 75), the OEM application is a 10L 540HP European OTR engine.
All that said, not sure there is any REAL benefit for going that low for a return filter which as others pointed out didn't exist before. The return filter is just supposed to be a rock catcher to keep the remnants of your disembowel CP4 from containing the rest of your low pressure fuel system. Honestly 9 microns is probably already overkill, 15-20 would probably be more than adequate since I doubt any show is taking particulate samples but rather just cleaning out everything they can see. Especially in light of any future fuel going into the system has a 10 micron and a 5 micron filter to get through before it hits the high pressure pump anyways.

I have the 2 micron racor return filter and have had no problems getting replacements.
i like the 2 micron filter becuase in my mind it’s acting like a bypass filter all the time. It does fill up with junk that the stock filters let pass. So it provides benefits in the same manner as oil by pass filters do.

I have seen the Racor snap filters kicking around online, doesn't seem too bad to hunt down. I will say the flow rate seemed pretty low at 26 gph for diesel.
I was under the impression the OEM lift pump was something in the 85-100 gph range. Of course this filtering return fuel, not sure of how much is coming back and at what rate.
I am all for better filtration don't get me wrong but I would rather it upstream of the high pressure pump so it gets all the fuel.
