Is a DPK worth it ?
You read the experiences of people having to fight and prove they did not use crap fuel or put DEF/Gas in their tank.
Dealerships denying warranty and handing you the bill north of $14,000 for the repair.
Ford/Bosch refuse to address the issue so thanks to the aftermarket we have options.
My personal belief is the DCR replacement pump by S&S Diesel is the ultimate answer, but initial outlay cost plus installation may be a big bite for the what if!
The DPK (Disaster Prevention Kit) comes in a few flavors. I am speaking about the S&S Diesel kit as this is the only one I have personal experience with. I have personally spoken with them and appreciate an American company with American made parts.
Backstory:
My CP4 departed this earth after 67k miles. I am OCD on fuel and filters. I could not get a local dealer appointment just for diagnosis for several weeks. We had a cross country trip already planned so my son hooked up my gooseneck flat deck trailer and came and got me. We did a full turn around trip (CA-TN-CA) in 77 hours. Do not recommend this. It’s a long trip. Anyway I had previously contacted my “Home” dealership Monarch Ford Exeter CA. And they said bring it in.
Within a day after unloading it, the Service Manager called and told me what I knew. CP4 went out. Then…. ”it’s covered under diesel warranty”.
I was fully prepared for the documentation fight.
But I was prepared for the just in case. I had a DCR in the cart ready to buy. But if it was to be covered I had the DPK ready as well.
Fast forward, the whole family got DPK for Christmas (3 trucks). I also installed one on a family friend's 19 350 with 119k miles on it.
While on a visit in March 24 my friends truck died on the freeway. We loaded him on a trailer and got him home. I diagnosed the truck. Crank but no start 216psi fuel pressure to start (commanded 4200) P087 DTC (low fuel pressure). Tank pump checked ok. Pulled the tank filter clean and 2 quarts of fuel also clean.
Pulled the DPK filter

Drained DPK filter

Cut the filter apart
You guessed it. GLITTER
I did not have time to get into the rest of the fuel system yet, but I am expecting the DPK saved the reset of the fuel system.
I will be installing a DCR and retaining the DPK “return line” filter as my friend wants it.
So a very long post for the short answer is the cost of a DPK worth it.
I will say yes most definitely.
I will update this post with relative information on the condition of the fuel system as I take it apart.

both as soon as I have a place to do the work. It'll suck laying out over $4k but it would suck much worse to break down in the middle of no where. Glad yours was covered under warranty!
As to warranty denials, when mine went belly up, diesel care extended warranty covered 100%, no deductible, plus paid my expense for motel and rental car.
Dealer doing repair told Ford warranty there was no trace of fuel contamination and zero rust, warranty approved immediately.
I have almost 50k miles of warranty left, once that runs out I will likely do the DCR pump, but won't do the DPK while there is warranty coverage in effect.
I have also been adding Opti-Lube XL fuel lubricant since the new pump install, hoping it helps.
Coming from a 4th gen Ram, the CP4 is my biggest concern with a Ford.

Now, that would be unless they are willing to lie to Ford warranty about it.
But, getting caught doing that could put their whole dealership at risk.
In the past, I've heard all kinds of stories about what guys say they got warranted even with a bunch of mods, but I also know of a dealership employee getting fired for doing a warranty repair on a modded truck because he didn't tell Ford warranty that the truck had a tune.
And, that was like 20+ years ago, and things were more loose back than too.
