I was having an issue where my truck was sputtering while in 4th gear upon investigation it looked as though the vacuum line between the carb and distributer was almost fallen off at the carb.
After reconnecting the vacuum line the truck will not start. On occasion I can get it to run but it’ll be at a low idle almost stalling out.
The hose to your vacuum advance will affect how the engine runs at cruise speed but it won't affect if it runs or not.
You need to start by seeing if your problem is fuel or spark related. pour a little gas in the carb , put the air cleaner lid back on and see if it starts and revs up momentarily. if it does then you figure out why it's not getting fuel, and the filter would be the first place.
I went ahead and replaced the canister filter and filter below the carb for good measure.
The truck will start and run but is pretty choppy. While poking around I found that the distributor cap is a little loose and if a put a little pressure on the distributor the truck will idle better.
I was going to take this opportunity to upgrade to a Petronix ignition. My question now is should the timing be checked prior to that install or do the electronics compensate?
You can check your timing now before you install the pertronix. You'll need to reset the timing after install as well. If you're timing is way off, try setting it back to original specs. The pertronix does not adjust timing, that will still be handled by the vacuum and mechanical advance in the distributor.
