'73 and '85

'73 and '85
I just put a 1985 300 cu in. in my 1973 replacing a '73 240 cu in. I used the manifolds, distributor, carb, and fuel pump from the '73. Was this a mistake, or do they interchange? I am having trouble fine tuning the engine, it runs and drives, doesn't stall, just idles rough in drive.

I don't have a vacuum gauge handy at the time but if I take a vacuum line off while in drive it has strong suction, I know, I know I need to get a vacuum gauge. Why would you start with vacuum? I am fairly new to auto mechanics.

you've done all the basics? all plug wires good, timing in the right range, carb idle mixture right, take a can of WD-40 and spray it it down the carb throat if the engine speeds up you have a vacum leak then spray it on any place vacum is made, intake gaskets, carb base,throttle shaft,vacum lines, ect another thing to look at inside the choke housing is a vacum piston for the choke pull off these make a great hidden vacum leak on 6's usually a ruff drive idle is caused by a miss under load and a vacum leak will give you a lean run condition
