Wiring up a push button starter switch

I need to wire up a push button starter switch on my 89 Ford van, I have the wires ran out to the solenoid on the fender, But do I hook up one wire to the battery side side of the solenoid, and the other wire to the starter side of the solenoid, or do I connect one wire, to the "S" solenoid terminal, and the other to the battery side of the solenoid?

One wire to the large battery terminal of the solenoid, run that to the switch, and on the other side of the switch run that back to the small S terminal. If you are going to do this and run it inside the cab, make sure you put a small 10 amp fuse near where you hook to the large battery terminal on the solenoid. This wiring and switch you are adding need protection in case something happens to touch metal somewhere. You can easily burn the van down if something happens to this small wire hooked directly to the battery +. Also remember the van will now crank over in any gear.

Does your van have a tilt steering wheel? And the keyswitch will not crank it over anymore? I bet you have the famous broken piece inside the column.

Ok thanks. So should I leave the original wire from the S terminal off, or connect it back up as well? It starts with the key, but on occasion it will not release and starter would stay engaged. New quality brand new solenoid and new starter, but will still hang up sometimes.Want to just add in a push button for now,

Leave the original wire off. That way if it still hangs up you know it's the solenoid. It is a very common problem with the cheap solenoids made in China, though it's hard to find one that is not made in China. Was the old one really bad?
