push button starter HELP PLEASE

wHAT IS THE CORRECT WAY TO WIRE UP A push button so i am able to start my truck. I do not have time to troubleshoot the iginition starting system !. If i jump accross the starter solenoid she fires right up but will not start with the key. The reason i feel the push button is adaquate is because this ol truck never see;s a public hi-way.
thx

push button starter HELP PLEASE

I read your reply to the other post about the method listed would not work. I wonder why?

What are you doing when you short across the terminals on the solenoid? Current from the hot 12 volt post runs through your shorting device(screwdriver?) to the small terminal which activates the solenoid.

There should be no difference between your shorting the terminal with a piece of scrap wire or metal object, and wiring a switch in the cab to do the same thing. Of course you may not have realized you need to use some decent size wire. At least 14 guage and 12 would be even better. Those solenoid coils draw more than you would think. Also you need a decent size switch. One of the common 10 amp momentary toggles should work.

Unhappy push button starter HELP PLEASE

Dave i am using a 20 amp bush button switch, and 14 guage wire.
I feel the same way as you/ Not sure why it will start when jumpered accross the solenoid with a screwdriver everytime. But the bushbutton will not work and it is new purchased at autozone. I think i am wiring it correctly , 1 wire to the hot side of the battery to the push button and one wire to the Starter side of solenoid back to the switch. Is this correct ?
Do you have to ground the push button switch ? In any way. ?
thx again

No, The other side goes to the S terminal of the starter solenoid.

It is a small terminal with a 90* Rubber covered connector on it.

Nope, if I am understanding you correctly, you wired the switch wrong(I hope it didn't burn the switch up). You need one wire like you have it to the battery, and the other wire needs to go to the SMALL terminal on the starter relay. The relay should click and the starter should turn over. If it clicks, and it won't turn over, I think you have found your original problem. The starter relay is bad.

Dave, there is no S terminal on this solenoid.
Just the 2 lugs on the side and the the small one with the letter I.

Now what ?

If there is only the one small terminal on the solenoid that's the one you use. Strange that it's marked I though.

When you say you jumped across the solenoid,
Which terminals are you shorting across to get it to start?

Was it the terminal that has the + battery cable to the I terminal or the
+Battery side to the opposite Starter cable side of the solenoid?

Okay, Take a piece of 14 gauge wire and attach one end to the
+ Battery post & the other end to that I terminal to see if the starter kicks over.

Is this a auto or std trans ?

I also attached a different illustration on the other thread.

I might just merge these two.

If you jumped 12 volts direct to the small terminal and nothing happened, and you jumped the 2 large terminals together and the starter turned. Then the relay is dead or has a bad ground thru the relay mount and bolts.

Sparky, Isn't this the system that requires the clutch to be depressed before it will turn over?

You are correct Mil1ion....it has a clutch interlock switch, so you cant start the truck in gear by mistake.
However it works electrically the same as a neutral safety switch, meaning if you put 12 volts direct to the relay you bypass all the safety stuff
