New Driver Grinding Gears

1947 1.5 Ton. I’m double clutching, but still some grinding from 2-3-4…can’t seem to figure it out…

Fresh filled gear oil….anyone?

No issues when in neutral starting out or finding any gear from neutral…just moving..

thank you all so much….learning..

hi ! don,t bring rpm too high when shifting up . down shifting you need to bring rev up to match road speed . don,t force it should shift smooth .they are touchy i still miss a gear now and then !

I agree with Bernette. My dad taught me how to drive stick on his Coast Guard truck with a 4 speed non-synchro transmission. He never double clutched, but instead controlled the rpm's. Starting out from a stop in 2nd, upshift to 3rd as soon as you can without lugging the engine. Do the same going into 4th. Downshifting is harder, and as Bernette suggests, you have to speed up the engine before making the shift.

I double clutch now, but still grind some gears. It's all part of the charm of driving a real truck.

Good luck.

Jim

Heavier weight gear oil might help, and be patient waiting for the RPM to drop before upshifting.

I noticed when I switched to full synthetic gear oil, it made shifting a lot easier.

Not the same non-synro transmission as yours but when I switched from store bought 90 wt gear oil to Red Line MT 90 the transmission also shifted easier also.
