Ok, just picked up this '03 XLS. I am going to pay this truck forward and give it to someone who really needs to work, (family & kids) etc. Truck is actually in pretty good shape, considering how dirty it was when I picked it up. MY problem, is previous owner said it (AC was working fine) and cold, till just the other day (LOL) . I can see the AC clutch turn on and cycle about every 5 to 10 seconds. When I turn on the fan switch, I don't hear or feel any air out of the vents. I do hear a slight click inside the (dash control panel) when adjusting the *****. I don't have any air when on "max cooling) on the ac switch, If I switch the settings, ( doesn't seem like I get much flow) BUT, then driving home today, I had it set to dash, and I could feel a very slight amount of air coming out of the vents? Didn't seem to me to be cold like a AC should but very slight air flow, as if it was opening up to let a little are through. Now, I had (still do) and 04, and remember a similar problem with the AC air flow, and it was a temperature? relay switch that I had to replace behind the glove box, with controlled the cycling and air flow.
Is that what is happening here, a air flow "relay", or is it a dirty climate control switch, (or faulty). My 04 has led indicator lights to tell me things, like on, etc. This 03 just has the fan control speed switch and the AC mode switch. What am I missing. ? I really don't want to hold on to this truck any longer than I have to, since it means work for the guy I am gifting it too. I don't have any reason to think the guy was lying, think it indeed probably put out cold air recently.
Oh, did replace the AC relay yesterday, just to see if it made any difference, no, nothing. Seems like on my 04, I can feel the full fan, (with or without) the AC on, as in just good old fan air when you want it, Cannot hear or feel any fan blowing, when I turn on the AC.?
Thanks for any help? , or to point me to some threads that might educate me. I am going to pull the *****, and use a good contact cleaner to clean the actual switches too, just for some PM
First issue to solve is why the blower motor isn't working---could be as simple as a fuse or a switch or the resistor network has failed or some other component in that circuit. Discover what's amiss there and then go about observing and/or testing the actual A/C function.
OK, guess I'm down to checking power at the blower. Checked all fuses and relays, they're good. The AC is working as when switched at the climate control switch, can hear the compressor kickm8n, and hear vents opening etc. I was tearing out a stereo in the dash so decided to swap out the "Blower Switch" since I happen to have one anyway (same as the 05's), but made no difference,,still no air. So will break out the meter and start looking for voltages at the switch, and the blower
You should have switched battery voltage at the BN-YE wire to the blower motor if everything "upstream" is working.
The other blower motor wire lead *should* be connected to ground through the blower switch when in HIGH. There should be a few ohms resistance to ground, increasing progressively as the speed switch is rotated counter-clockwise to LOW.
If you have the diagram you can run power through the motor to confirm that it's bad. Measure resistance first to see if it's open or shorted. It's just a 12 volt DC motor. If the motor works there's a motor control problem. One elimination in the troubleshooting process. It looks easy to get to the motor plug.
