I'm new to the Superduty and Forscan. I did a couple searches for a little info and didn't quite find what I'm looking for. If I buy a used BCM from a XLT for my XL what will I have to do to get it to work? 2012 F-350 Reg Cab SRW 6.2L
pretty sure you cant program modules with Forscan. To program a used module you will need Ford IDS software and perform a programable module installation procedure to write the correct VIN to the BCM.

This is functionally correct. Very experienced Forscan users, who also have extensive IDS experience, have been able to flash modules with files and also handle special functions like VIN, PATS etc. It's more complicated depending on the module and year. Most complicated are PCM, BCM and IPC w/PATS. IPC w/o PATS is easier. There are no step-by-step instructions for doing this.
Unfortunately it appears IDS does not like to program used modules so no normal dealership will do it. I think I saw a video by Ford Tech Makuloco where he tells you how to fool IDS into programming a used module.

So, I'm getting the feeling buying a used one just won't plug and play?
I am not a Forscan expert but I have followed their forum for years and have made many changes with Forscan.
If your BCM is dead the you can try installing a new one since there is little risk.
1. Find a BCM with exact part number....maybe impossible. Try car-part.com
2. Find a BCM with a later version part number. The last two digits are the revision level xxxx-xxxx -AB for example.
3. Use Forscan to make a copy of your existing BCM configuration file. Forscan can do this easily.
4. Install the replacement BCM and download your configuration data.
5. Start your vehicle and see if everything works.
Hopefully the 2012s are simple enough for this to work. I think the complicated systems started around 2014. If there are problems it's difficult to find help on any forum because everything is model and year specific.
I would try it but I have a high tolerance for frustration and problem solving.

Thanks. I'm going to look for a used on with the same part number.
