Yes, that is a DIY job if you have the tools and skills required. But that does not mean it still isn’t a PIA!!!
Good luck.

I saw videos on line of changing the axle as well as videos of changing the joint.
Both seem like a major PITA (unless one is a very experienced mechanic), but the joint change appears a little bit more of a PITA.
I'll be bringing this to a local mechanic (and keeping my fingers crossed that he know what to do).
Thanks again!
Brought the truck in and the mechanic took it apart.
Found the wheel bearing/hub, hub lock and axle (with seal) needed to be replaced. $1,800 in parts. $575 in labor.
I could have gotten all the parts for about $1,200 if I ordered online (which the mechanic said was fine with him, but if they're the wrong parts, I've got to pay for the additional labor -- which is fair). Then I discovered that the online place couldn't guarantee that any of the parts were in stock and ready to ship. That unknown, combined with the risk of ordering the incorrect parts, made me decide on the $1,800 the mechanic quoted for the parts.
No inexpensive way to own things any more.
Thanks again for everyone's help here!
DANA10013778 Entire front pass shaft 135
TIMKENSP940202 Front wheel hub/bearing 272

DORMAN600220 hub lock for 4wd 125
Shipping ~100 to over estimate
Total for parts to your door 668. Never go back to the mechanic who just bent you over with no vasoline for 1200 in markup on parts alone. And those are the upper level parts, you could save even more if you wanted with lesser name brands, which I'm sure he did. Rockauto is near what mechanics (jobber) pricing is, typical is +5% over jobber.

If I was doing the work myself, and didn't value my time too much, I would definitely do as you suggest.
