I recently pulled the motor from my 1984 f150. I know it's not the original motor since the vin claims it's a 351 windsor but the deck height is too low for that. The guy i bought the truck from said it was a 302, but I'm trying to confirm and hopefully figure out what year. I tried google but that went as expected. There's no shelf casted into the block by the starter and the bell housing area by the back of intake manifold is blank. I did find a casting number on the intake manifold itself, but that says it's a '78 351/400 modified which seems wrong since the bell housing is a windsor series not 385 series. Additionally the timing chain is not recessed in like the modified. So is there somewhere else i can find the date info? The Manifold says "D8AE"
D8 for 1978 is a revision date on the casting. The casting could have been used for a few years after '78. Theres a date code down by the starter area if you really must know.
Does it run ok?
'78 was still a dark year for power for all engines. Mid to late '80s the roller cams started to show up etc.
You probably know all that.....
If it comes to upgrading or replacing, there's plenty of info here on what to look for to get into the 200s+ for HP for very little effort beyond the basics. Ditto the 351W as to roller cams.

i think i'm satisfied. it ran but drank oil, i'd drive it for 15 minutes and need a gallon of oil, but it was fine idling. so i got a 97 f250 with a 351w i'm gonna put in there, swap it back to carburetor the works. I plan to put new heads and a cam in eventually for now i'm focusing on getting it running
