i've never done it, but apparently a good ultrasonic cleaner will vibrate fast enough to cause it to flake off. be a cool thing to have for other parts for sure.
i know hydrochloric acid and lye will both remove it, but it will eat the metal under it too so could be a timing issue where you damage the piece itself if you're not careful.
sand or soda blasting would leave a nicer finish than grinding.
i think i'd go with the ultrasonic cleaner though just because i've always wanted one.
