Curtis, my sincere condolences. It isn't an easy time now and his memory will never fade. I lost my dad a couple of years ago and I still look over my shoulder expecting to see him. And to the other four folks who mentioned also recently losing their dads, take solace that we will all go through the same thing at some point.
The VA funeral reps that I dealt with at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio were top-shelf, and really knew their jobs. Most were veterans and showed the utmost respect and professionalism dealing with me in setting up my father's interment. Dad is resting in a columbarium amongst other veterans, with room for his widow when her time comes.
So, if that's where your father is to be interred, then I believe that once you see the place you'll be sure that your father would've approved.
My sister investigated and says there is a VA national cemetery not too far from where she lives in Irving, suburb of Dallas.
Funeral home is supposed to handle it for us I believe, but good to know it was a easy process for you, hope it is for us too.

In either case, I'm sure that y'all will be pleased with the services.
Yeah, has to be the one near my sister, plus some day my plan is to move back up there, have nobody in the Houston area anymore, only family I have left is in the Dallas area.
provide a DD214 to the cemetery. that way they can verify his info for the stone. They can also take your Mom's info if she will join him in the future. they can be buried in the same plot

Yeah, we had his DD214, and that is how they found out he was eligible for the VA burial.
As to his wife, no idea what her afterlife intentions are.
So sorry for your loss Curtis.
Just now seeing this thread.
I absolutely get that about not being able to call your Dad. Those firsts you are about to experience suck. Lost my Dad in 2017 to Pancreatic Cancer. He would always call me for updates on our trips and he really enjoyed trying to guess where we were when he called. No trip since he passed have I not longed for that phone to ring or some project I had in mind I would call and get his opinion on.
The irony is that I was always a Chevy guy and he was a Ford man to the core. I didn't buy my first Ford until 2018 and I'm confident he got quite the chuckle out of it. Losing Dads are hard to overcome. Life won't ever be the same but you learn to reflect on the great times over time vs the pain of the loss. Best wishes for your days ahead. Don't hesitate to reach to any of us if you need someone to chat with.

I'm sorry for your loss, the firsts, seconds and thirds are tough but 23 years later since we lost our mom, holidays have gotten better but her birthday and day she left are still difficult. I'm fortunate to still have my dad around, it only took me 58 years to find him (long story).
Dad's services at the DFW National Cemetery is scheduled for the 19th, and his memorial service is scheduled at his church the following day.
My sister, and my dad's wife are relying on me to write out the obituary, which is becoming a daunting task, trying to get everything paired down to a concise remembrance and accounting of his life.
