water temp sender

I've been researching the location for the water temp sending unit on my 292 Y Block. One answer I got was on the intake manifold behind the thermostat housing which is, I think, a good place. However that is where the return hose for the heater goes. I think I could put the return hose fitting in the opening on the water pump return spout and the sending unit behind the thermostat housing but it doesn't seem right to me. The other answer I found is removing the freeze plug from the back of the drivers side head and install an adapter, which I have already ordered from Denis Carpenter, for the sending unit there, which seems to be the proper place for it, being it is close to the instrument panel as is the oil sender. I am a little weary of removing that freeze plug because the motor is freshly rebuilt and I'm not sure how I will remove the freeze plug and how well the adapter will fit. I also plan to install a mechanical water temp gauge if I can. If I can't, I will go with the mechanical gauge. The motor is a 292 Y Block casting number is EDB 6015-E. Any advise will be appreciated.
Thanks, Rick

The correct placement is the drivers side rear head. I'm a bit puzzled that there's not an adapter already there as this is the factory location. Better check the other head and see if there's a spot on it for the sender and the heads got mixed up. The heads can be swapped except for the temp sensor location. I ran a mechanical temp gauge for years in the same location until I rebuild my engine. That's when I found out there were two sizes of adapters for the head. The adapters are much harder to pull than a freeze pulg and it's been so long I frankly can't remember how I did it, other than the engine was in the truck when I did it.

Assumption

My apologies BJ, I made an assumption. The Intake manifold ports were taped over when I purchased the rebuilt motor. When I peeled it of the right head I assumed that the left side had a freeze plug also (what a dummy). After reading your reply it occurred to me that I hadn't checked the left side. I ran out to the garage and checked. As you said, there it was. Thank you for your reply. Do you have any thoughts on where to put the manual temp gauge sensor?
Thanks for your help, Rick

Hey no problem Rick.
I ran mine where the electric sending unit was. My gauge in the cluster wasn't working. I'm not sure where you could install both the factory and mechanical gauge, like Ting the oil pressure gauge so you could run two gauges. But then again, what would you need two temperature gauges for anyway? Sorry, I doubt this is of any help.

You've already helped enough. And thanks for that. Don't really need two, just wanted the one on the instrument panel to work also.
