Suspension Upgrade Completed!

Just completed installing the ProComp 22210/22415, shocks, wheels and tires. I researched a bunch of different lifts, from many manufacturers. For me, it came down to what I planned to use the truck for, performance, price . This is our family adventure vehicle and my hunting rig. It will see lots of forest service roads, mountains trails and open deserts throughout the west. I wanted to run 35s and have no clearance issues. I went with Pro comp springs, Icon 2.5 adjustable piggy backs up front and Icon 2.0 remote res in the rear (still on order). My rational for the 2.5s up front, is amount of time spent on forest service roads and the weight up front. Plus Icons can be rebuilt and tuned. They are valved specifically for the Excursion (according to Icon). I checked with AccuTune, but they wanted $800 per shock, non adjustable. (Fox 2.5 remote).

I purchased adjustable track bar, u-bolts and rear top plates with bump tangs from PMF. The first set of U-bolts I ordered for the front were too short (8.5”), I ended up using 9.5”

Bump stops were shot, so I replaced those with energy suspension stops.

Wheels: 17” Method 705 titanium BS 4.75”

Tires: Toyo Open Country RT trail 35x12

Slight rub on the plastic air dam of front bumper, I trimmed plastic corners.

I used WFO 2 degree shims up front but not in the rear. I wanted to check the angle before installing. It appears there is a 4 degree difference, now I wish I had used the 2 degree shims. I watched a video that suggested anything over 7 should be corrected. I have no vibrations, so do I leave it as is, use the 2 degree or go ahead and order 4 degree? I think having everything in line will help with longevity.

I did not follow the recommended alignment settings, I let the shop do their thing. Alignment has a 6 month / 6k warranty so if an issue arises I’ll take it back. My truck tracks straight and does not wonder.

The hardest part of the procedure was wrestling the springs back in solo with floor jacks. I had one stubborn bolt, but it only required a PB blaster soak, and a cheater bar.

The truck has 133k miles, it came with an old school super chips micro tuner. I was running stock, but now with the bigger wheels and tires, I’m running the middle tune, Perf - Tow. It definitely makes a difference. I’d like to keep it mild, but I’ll probably need to add cold air intake and exhaust, definitely an egt probe maybe and switch to a hydra to have more tuning options.

Here are a few pics! Thanks for reading.

I bought the complete kit from energy suspension, all bushings for everything on the truck.
those Body Mounts made a Huge Difference in how the truck rides, the OEM mounts were completely destroyed.

If you have no vibrations then leave the shims alone!

Nice Work. Truck looks Great!!! my son just did a bunch of suspension upgrades on my 01 gasser. 168, 000 on it.
Drove it to Boston from Long Island 2 weeks ago. 10 hrs round trip drove great but still has some wander . He’s going to do ball joints next, which hopefully will fix the problem. I listed all the upgrades on here recently. Otherwise, it drove fine.
Best of luck on your adventures. Thanks for sharing.

Looks spectacular. What'd you do with the old wheels? Looking to get rid of my "moto metals"

The stock wheels are sitting in my garage. I can’t decide whether or not to keep them or sell them.

Red Head Steering pump
@bblock what difference did the red head gear box make? The stock steering does bother me.

My son just explained the whole deal to me as he understands it. The steering box from Ford is a wear item, and that being said the remanufactured ones offered as replacement they just pull parts from shelves and package.. supposedly redhead measures all the tolerances and uses parts available that fit tighter specs, or remakes the parts themselves to tighter tolerances than the original making tighter steering. If you just buy some XYZ remanufactured steering pump you really don’t know what tolerance they’re working with or what you’re getting. I do notice the steering is much tighter, but as I have mentioned in this thread before my wheel bearings are worn so I do still get a little wander at times. He also replaced a bunch of other items so hard to distinguish which exact item is making the big difference. I just know that as far as the steering pump I believe that was the right choice, especially after reading other peoples comments on it in here. This is just his opinion and I’m going along with what he says because I don’t really know a hell of a lot about this stuff.😂
If anyone has better info please feel free to add, comment or disagree😀

Looking good! I think you may have just made my decision to go back to 35s as opposed to staying at 37s. Also, great looking frame! Always nice to see a clean X!

How are you liking the tires? How much road noise?
