Been there, done that. From what I understand of the fuel system, the fuel is drawn through the filter from the tank, even though the pump is IN the tank, is still draws like the early models so the pump has filtered fuel going through it instead of drawing crap from the bottom. The fuel enters from the tank and runs outside of the filter, gets pulled through the media, then pumped to the secondary before being returned. I think it actually will pass through that filter housing twice to remove water. I saw the same thing, (see above thread link) when I replaced my filter. I believe it is construction crap left in the tank from manufacturing.

If the CP4 is failing there would be a light coating of metal particles all over the housing and filter.

Not the first time filters have been changed. First time was at 31k miles, done by the Ford stealership. Truck now has 55k miles and I did the filter change.

The first time I changed the filters, there were no sparklies. There was three small ivory colored plastic pieces. I had concerns, but
nothing came of it.The second change and there were no pieces.

Ok, tear down to FCV is complete, photos below, one for each of the 4 sides. I see zero visible buildup of anything on any part of the mesh screens or anywhere else on the FCV or down in the pump body. I'm leaning towards just doing the DCR conversion and keeping the CP4 and all the OEM parts in case hard times arise and I need to keep the truck running.

I use it to tow a 24" Intec car hauler for my track day hobby. The only truck I could imagine I would ever want besides this one would be a F-350 dually if I decided to do some major 5th wheel camper hauling some day down the road. I think with the right mods my truck would handle 5th wheel duty pretty well (bags, bigger front roll bar, add rear roll bar, etc.). It's a 2020 Platinum Crew CAB 4x4 short bed, with HCTTP, 10,800 GVWR, and 3:55 axle. I've had it since new. Right now I have a ARE Z-series bed topper on it with a 40 gal aux tank in the bed that I got from ATTA in Ft. Worth when the truck was almost new.

Thanks everyone for your comments and tips!

Here's a post showing the truck:

And a post showing the Intec car hauler hooked up:
