I cleaned up the pitting and rust last night, put some lube on the seal and where it rides on the spindle, and got it all buttoned back up. Everything seemed okay on the material pick up trip this morning. Will keep an eye on things. Unfortunately the brakes still feel a bit grabby, so I worry that the passenger side has started leaking again. Will take a peek this weekend.

Is the seal that Dave recommended the best for an axle that has worn spindles like this one does? If I remember correctly it seems like the factory one I initially replaced was a different style altogether.

If you got oil on the brake pads, they will be grabby, no matter how much you clean them. Once you get the oil leak fixed, i would get new pads. You may be able to save the old ones by taking a torch and cooking the oil out of the pads. But it's probably not worth the trouble on these type of pads, they are cheap enough.

The National seal you used has a static seal on the axle, thats why it has multiple ribs and goes on tite. The actual sealing surfaces are inside of the seal similar to the CR Scotseal. You can never get oil out of brake shoes or pads. It absorbs in and will not come out complety utill you put it back together, apply the brakes and when warmed up the oil comes back to the surface and you experience brake lock up or grabbing.

I was told Corn Starch will also bring out the oil / brake fluid but I know 100% new pads / shoes will work

My 02 Dodge had a leaking cyc a long time ago just before going away and needed the SUV.
I used brake clean on the shoes and all is good when it is dry out but if it is damp or raining the first time you hit the brake that wheel locks up.
Once you get some heat in it no more loke up but it is a PITA at first brake push!
