Yep! You read it right. I am wanting to jump on the bandwagon of putting a 12v 6 bt in a F250. Little back ground I have a 1996 F250 351w with a 5 speed 4x4. Wanted to keep the transmission but it doesn’t look like that dog will hunt. I have a lead on a 5 speed 2wd from a 94 F350 idi. The question I have is will my transfer case bolt up to the 2wd idi?
The 351 is about due for a rebuild and I’ve always wanted to throw my hard earned money into the diesel world… hopefully I don’t go bankrupt. Any suggestions or comments would be helpful in this adventure.
From what I have gathered online, you can either use an adapter plate for the transmission, or you can use the NV trans from the dodge. I have heard that the gear ratios in the ZF trans with the 6bt's torque curve do not jive perfectly. I cannot verify this as I've yet to do that swap.
If you do this swap I am curious about the power steering pump and other accessories on the motor. Please take a lot of pictures and post on here!
If you're okay with cutting the trans tunnel and making a new crossmember, I'd skip 5 speeds altogether and get a zf6. I can't stand the 5 speeds w/ 3 acceleration gears, they drive me nuts. Stay away from the nv's, they are great with OEM parts, but they're terrible if they've ever been rebuilt because soft parts are all that are available. If it's just gonna be a weekend warrior, and the truck is rusty, etc, then F it, keep it cheap with a 5 speed. If it's gonna be a forever truck, I would do the extra work for the zf6.
There are infinite threads on doing this swap, so take your time, read some, update the thread with questions, and TAKE YOUR TIME FINDING PARTS. If you're in a hurry with parts, you'll pay "in a hurry" prices.
