i've been doing a little light reading and a couple of questions come to mind.
does a ford 9" utilize a friction modifier and what exactly is this additive? is 75w90 appropraite lube? i know our local quiklube added a friction mod to our '97 f150 when we went synth.
i've seen a repeated refence to a nodular housing, what does this refer to?
it has an "N" stamped into it, and is a good bit stronger than a normal 9". Good luck finding one.
btw, fiction modifier is only needed in trak-lok or other "clutch-pack" type rear ends (except for lockers and cone-type posis). It keeps the rearend from chattering around turns.
if your truck just has an open rear end then you don't need any additives. Do a search on how to read rear end tags. The tag will be on the right dise of the rear end up high on the front between two of the 10? bolts that hold the third member to the housing.
One the bottom left of the tag there will be three numbers grouped as one and then two. If there is a large gap between the two it is an open rear end. If there is a letter you need friction crap. Ex.=> 3 08 VS 3 H 08
(some letter, probably not H)
Originally posted by freak98 I have a Strange super case and Daytona pinion support with a Strange 1350 chromemoly yoke in my Bronco.I have 680.00 buck's just in those 3 item's.
what would you say you have into your complete third member? i've been looking around ebay and a complete built pumpkin is not cheap. mines on it's way south and the clock is ticking to find a parts truck with a rearend to rebuild or an already complete unit.
Here's a total of the cost of my part's.Not including 4 quart's of 75w 140 Richmond synthetic gear lube and new axelshaft bearing's.
Strange center section=379.00
Daytona pinion support(steel)=95.00
Strange 1350 chromemoly yoke=130.00
Detroit locker=420.00
Strange 4.56 gear's=170.00
Installation kit=105.00
Mosier shaft's=300.00
1600 dollars just in part's and I do the setup myself, with a solid pinion spacer, instead of a crush collar. If you would like to see picture's of my Bronco and more particulars here the link. www.superford.org/?vID=4037
nice truck freak, with all those gauges do your stock units still function and what are they all for? i've been looking for a wheel like that and got outbid by a buck the other day (the trouble with proxy bidding ).
so i've got an idea of the ranges of price for a rearend, is there an advantage of a solid crush collar. i see references to different size wheel bearings and assuming the stock 3.50 unit is under my truck what size are they likely to be (pretty sure it's stock).
i see nodular housings for auction and would like to go this route if possible. did these trucks ever come stock with the nodular units and what do you think the possibility of getting burned bidding on a "nodular unit"?
All those gauge's monitor my motor and tranny,I disconnected my stock gauges except for my gas gauge. The reason for a solid spacer is so you don't loose your pinion preload. With a crush collar the collar has a tendency to keep crushing because tire size and the weight of the vehicle.
