I hesitate to admit it, but it probably would physically fit. We see all the time 67-72 tailgates on 64-66, and 73-79's mixed up on 67-72's, and vice-versa, so one could presume the 73-79 would fit a 66. It would certainly look goofy because the shape is going to be different and the body lines wouldn't match, much like they look here, below, when they get stuck on the wrong year truck. 64-66 and 67-72 has the same rear shape. You can see here how poorly it matches with the shape of the bed. People who know what they're looking at will scratch their heads and wonder why.
It's off a Slick.. and yes they will fit up to 79 that I know of, have one on my 77 and actually prefer the handle on those more, definitely worth every penny they are asking for it in the shape it is!!
Must be opposite day today.
As Skidoor & 52Merc pointed out, OP's photo is not correct for a '66. While it will fit, my suggestion is to wait for the right one to come around.
Here is a copy and paste from a NumberDummy post. I have to think if the early tailgates cannot be used on the 73-79's without modifications the same will be true for using those gates on earlier trucks. C7TZ-9940700-A = 1967/72 F100/350 Styleside Tailgate / FoMoCo "service part replacement" for C4TZ-9940700-A = 1964/66 F100/250 2WD & 1966 F100 4WD Styleside tailgate.
1964/66 tailgate has large FORD block letters / 1967/72 tailgate has smaller FORD letters surrounded by a raised ovate scallop line.
All the mounting hardware is the same. Neither of these tailgates can be used on 1973/79's without mods as the mounting hardware is different as are the hinges. The only thing that's the same are the "scissors."
Martinez CA, huh? Just a few miles up the freeway from me. So that is what a OEM 73-79 in good shape might be. Some day I'll have to unload this Slick tailgate, a camper pull off, that I have had since 2009. Thought I'd get another truck but instead got a Dodge Polara and an AMC Ambassador wagon. Same goes for a rare rust free hood with factory holes for windshield washer nozzles.
