Cam Installation

This is not for real experienced builders, but for people just starting. I installed a Stage One Melling Cam in a 302, was careful, checked everything thoroughly and when went to start, engine backfired through the carburetor and a soft flame came out. Not being experienced I thought Oh Sht, I blew something up. Checked, triple checked, quadruple checked everything, timing gear index, TDC #1 piston on compression stroke, rotor pointing to #1 post in the distributor, Timing, verified timing marks with a homemade piston stop, firing order with the wires and it kept happening and I would immediately shut it down fearing to blow something up and putting all kinds of stress on the new cam’s lobes with the constant starts. The only thing that might have saved me was Lucas Extreme Pressure Grease. All it was, was the new hydraulic lifters were pumped full of oil from Melling and needed to run for a few seconds to equalize and get the valve timing right. There was nothing wrong and it caused major headaches and time. If this prevents one person from going through this, it was worth it.

Thanks
mjac
