Think it is timing

Hi everyone: I have a 289 motor in my bronco it was rebuild from a friend , when I went to start it for the frist time it is piping an back flowing out of the carb. He said he put a newer cam an timing best set in it . So I checked the timing by outing #1 to tbc compression an the rotor was pointed to down so I polled out the dis. An reset it acording to the book an it still

back flowes . Thank Rick

Bringing the #1 piston to TDC then check the timing marks on the harmonic balancer two make sure. Where the rotor points that's #1. Also check valve adjustment. That could be a problem. Is the cam correct for the application?

Make sure that the cam you're using matches the firing order. If you are using a 351W cam, you need to use the 351 (and 302 HO) firing order. Does moving around the timing while it is running improve it?

Spark jumping at points can be a bad condensor. Points, condensor set is cheap, replace them.

How meany volts is my coil need I have just under 7 volts, if I put 12 volts will it burn it up an also. How do I hook it up I have heard that you put the pov. wire on the neg. side of the coil or am I wrong . Thank again Rick

If everything is stock(resistor wire), in start 12v is applied to the coil. Voltage drops when engine is running to protect the stock coil. In run position, you may read 12v or the reduced voltage depending on if the points are closed or not. Power feed goes to pos side of coil, lead from distributor to neg side.
