Oh yea that piece. It's on the return line. Not sure what exact purpose is of it. But that's where the return fuel comes out. Most leave it off when the mod the pickup.
before taking the sending unit out I noticed a fuel line with a bag zip tied around it?
That's the factory quick disconnect line that runs from tank to fuel pump. That driven diesel kit comes with a new line thst runs from the tank to the fuel pump. It's the fiber braided line with 2 clamps on the sending unit in the same Pic.

So the previous guy put the umbrella piece back in when he did the mod which was real dumb. I’m ditching that. Should I just extend that pipe to make a 90 degree angle to lay horizontally on the bottom of the tank so I never have to do this ever again? If so where would I get such a piece?
No need for a 90. Just run it down as close as you can to the bottom without restricting flow on the pickup, and it should be fine. Be sure to use a good quality stainless steel compression coupling because that factory tubing is extra heavy wall tough stuff and cheapos won't get it done. The ferals won't seat properly and you'll fight leaks.

Some guy mentioned Extending that pipe all the way down to the bottom while still having the umbrella piece on. That way if it does fail you won’t run out of fuel. Although if it broke again there’s a chance it could end up sucking tiny little broken plastic pieces in…

Yes that was me. And that’s a true concern.
Someone should start making stainless steel umbrellas.
Honestly in my case I’m most concerned about the type of compression fitting I used. Can’t remember for the life of me.
