Do I need to bleed?

1977 F150. 6 cylinder, one barrel carburetor. Is it necessary to bleed the fuel system? I recently changed the tank and now the engine shuts off after 15 seconds. Is it possible for 1 person to do this? I have no help.

I have never heard of bleeding a fuel system.

When it shuts off, how soon can you restart it?

Did you change fuel caps or anything else?

Is 15 seconds for real, or just a guess, like could it be a whole minute?

I would take a gas can and set it on a stool beside the the drivers front fender in close proximity to the mechanical fuel pump on the I6 motor, Run a fuel line from the fuel can to the inlet on the mechanical fuel pump. Now start it . If the problem still exists you know from the fuel pump back is not the problem and from the fuel pump to the carb is where the problem lives. Post back with any questions or progress.

X2 no need to bleed the fuel system, it is NOT EFI. Once you turn it over and it starts, the fuel system is bleed. Do you have a inline fuel filter between the fuel pump and the carb? Replaced it lately? X2 trouble shoot it off a pony tank. Like Redroad said or set it on the ground next to the tire. If it starts and idles and does not die, you know what direction to trouble shoot.

Maybe take some VERY LOW pressure compressed air and shoot thru the "in" line coming from the tank to the fuel pump and blow back to the tank. NOT thru the fuel pump but at the connection. Maybe the fuel line has some junk in it? LOW pressure, you do not want to blow the pick up tube filter sock off or split it open. And check out your User control panel/visitor messages. Come on over to the FTE Missouri chapter, you have neighbors.

FYI when rebuilding my 81 F100 with a 300 I also had the can on the inner fender so I could move it.
When I first did this setup I could not pull fuel from the can
Thinking bad pump from sitting I replaced and got the same problem

I then replaced the rubber hose from pump to can and get the pump to pull fuel.
The hose I started with was 3/8" and even with 2 clamps would not pull fuel.
When with 5/16" 1 clamp and got fuel.
So make sure you are using the right size hose.
You did replace the hose at the tank asthe old may look good but be cracked and sucking air and not fuel.

Thanks very much for the replies. Before I try something else, I have a question. Is there an adjustment on the carburetor that changes when the temperature gets to a certain degree after 15 seconds?

Choke maybe? But 15 seconds is a little fast.
