The pump on my 1996 F150 4.9 constantly makes noise...tried different flds, no help....what replacement do you guys/gals recommend?
How bad is the noise?
Did you try lucas power steering stop leak? Ignore the name of "stop leak" for the purpose of this conversation.
The lucas is worth trying, because none of the pumps you'll get are as good as the one you have. If the lucas doesn't quiet it down enough to suit your liking, then just about any pump will be ok for the next few years
My truck was a project for several years, so I drove it in the driveway during that time.
The power steering pump was always noisy and the power steering pressure switch leaked.
After I replaced the pressure switch, I syringed out a pint or two of power steering fluid and topped it off with Wolf's Head Super Universal Synthetic ATF, because I already had it on hand for my M5ODR2 transmission.
It quieted way down. Hardly noticeable now.
Who knows, maybe the Ford recommended ATF would have accomplished the same thing but it's working for me, so I'm going with it.
if you want to keep your C2 pump, try some seafoam trans tune and flush your fluid reservoir after a week witth something to suction it out, then fill with more fluid/seafoam then do that a couple of weeks. Then at that time, if your hoses are old, replace them(rubber breaks down internally) and install a power steering cooler and a magnetic filter on the return line. Then once fluid starts staying clean, do a full flush, and fill with the factory amount in manual + enough for the cooler setup and fill with quality type F fluid ONLY
Your unlikely to be fully satisified with this as it will be quieter but not quiet (probably.)
What engine do you have? the 5.0, 5.8, 7.5, and powerstroke disesels are easy to make saginaw pump styles.
The 4.9 can only "properly" be done by using E150-E350 van brackets which match your setup (year range and ac comp or not)
So there is only so many of those brackets out there and unless you find some in a yard its pricy on ebay. There is another known way to do it on a 4.9 but it involves removing an uncomfortable amount of support off the bracket for my liking.
Not for that kind of money. I converted the ‘87 Bronco and now the ‘89 F-150 to Saginaw pumps. I take the pump with pulley and pressure hose still mounted on the bracket to the junkyard cashier and pay less than $100 including tax.

Hundreds of thousands of miles on several different trucks with the Ford pump. The B2 has a Lares reman which has been great.

Lol I think if I were to tally my miles driving I probably only break 100,000 k, but I’m only 25 lol
Ford was too proud to put GM Saginaw pumps on many vehicles
A few stinkin Lincolns and a few vans is all
A shame
Too proud to keep pushrod engines too (until the 7.3 of course), which is a shame....the ls platform is way more like a next gen windsor than it was a sbc
