I'm starting from scratch so not sure where the distributor was before. Have the engine at TDC #1 compression with the mark on the crank pulley lined up with the pointer, everything is good there.
Distributor stabbed pointed at #1.
Question is since the whole body can still rotate where do you set it to as a starting point? Do you just get it close than adjust once running. Truck is not ready to run right now but I do have a timing light I can use when it is.
Vacuum advance is pointing almost forward so there's plenty of room to rotate both ways.
If everything is as you say, you should be good to go to start. If you want to advance the timing just a hair, you can rotate the dist a tiny bit clockwise, but it should fire as is so you can fine tune it after starting.

Just so we’re all in the same page, how did you verify TDC?
And when you say distributor is pointed at number one, is the rotor pointed at the number one cylinder, or at the location on the distributor cap where the number one spark plug wire goes?
Sorry if these are obvious basic questions that you already knew about, but I’ve seen too many times over the years where people that are fairly new to this have misinterpreted things.
And I may have missed it, but is this a points distributor, Dura Spark, or something else?
Having a timing light will be your friend here, but if electrical is not hooked up yet, you may have a time to wait before you can fine-tune the timing.

I spun the engine by hand with my finger in the spark plug hole until I felt pressure/air being pushed out. Then used a wooden dowel to watch until it came all the way up.
To clarify rotor pointed at number one cylinder.
I missed adding but it's an HEI style distributor. So rotor at number one and when you put the cap on that's where you start with the spark plug wiring/firing order.
There's a pretty wide window where you can have the vacuum advance pointing/spun so wanted to see if there's a way to see a starting point for that.
