Well I have searched and cant find out much useful information. I have a 79 F 150, 300 I6, and a 4 speed man. It is burning oil and fowling out plugs. I made a call to my garage and was told not to have it diagnosed because it needed rebuilt. So anyway, do I have any option to swap the motor with something bigger and if so what motor would be easiest and best value, and what would I need to make things work. Any info is greatly appreciated seein how im not mechanically inclined. Thanks
A swap to any other motor would involve lots of mechanical fiddling etc.
As far as what will bolt to your tranny; 300-6, 302, 351W, 351C (The Cleveland is rare and not well supported anymore). The 300-6 is a good truck motor, my second choice would be the 351Wheezer.
I ditched my 300 a year ago... it was still running strong, but there's no comparing it to the 390 I have now. It was an easy swap for me, because I had a complete donor truck to rob parts off of. I'm sure it would've been a headache without it.
If you do decide to swap, just make sure your new engine is bigger than a 302. That 300 makes more low end torque, and you'll be disappointed with anything less than a 351.
Actually, my gas mileage has change very little. I believe that the 300 was overtaxed in pulling my big tires with the stock gear ratio. (plan to fix that soon!) Not knocking the 300s... I also think they're great truck engines that last forever. I've had three different 300s that served me faithfully, but I found all of them lacking in the horsepower department. Of course, I like my foot in the floor!
Lot's of time I wish I had the 300. I'm just too old and feeble to swap my 460 for a 300.
I had three of those tough old 300's and wish I had them all back now!
Rebuild it, or buy a long block from a reputable engine builder.
I think one point we forgot to mention is that for somebody who isn't "mechanically inclined", the 300 is a lot easier to keep running smoothly. Might think about that too.
I just did a swap from a 300 six to a 351W, and it went pretty smoothly, you'll need to change the frame perches. I used perches that I got from a junk yard from a 351M truck, and they have to be moved towards the firewall, and then get some new 302/351W motor mounts. Your bell housing will bolt right up.
My biggest problem was trying to get headers to work, and I ended up using Hedman shorties that dumped just above the clutch linkage. I had to "massage" the cab floor alittle to make them work, which then made me have to to some tweaking to the gas pedal linkage. I got a radiator for a 351M which seems to be working just fine.
I was lucky that I had got all the engine brackets for the alt. and pwr. steering with the motor before I had it rebuilt, but those things could cause you some headaches if you had to go in search of them.
I'm up and running just need to do some adjustments to my carb, I went with a 600CFM Holley, and it's running a little rich out of the box.
Hope this helped..
