Head scratching
only ran if you put go juice down the carb. I changed the wires and plugs, still the same.
I changed the fuel pump and pulled and soaked the carb, didn't pull it apart because I didn't get a rebuild kit yet. I changed out the fuel line from pump to carb and put in a fuel filter inline.
Now the damn thing won't start at all.
I have spark on all cylinders I have fuel to the carb. I know I have to get a carb kit or just another carb, but it won't even run crappy now . Yes it has been sitting in a Field since 1987 so I am just happy it turns over. And I'm in Alberta Canada and doing this in my driveway in February, so frequent beer breaks to warm up. Thanks in advance for any help.
In situations like this, after you've verified that it runs with gas poured down the throat of the carb, take some extra care and fill the float bowl(s) through the bowl vents that every carb has.
Doing this will allow the engine to run for at least a couple of minutes like it normally would on it's supply of gas in the carb.
changing the ignition components because you don't have fuel does not make sense.
As said, no sense. In fact, with today's crappy parts, you may very well add more mystery than you solve.
In your case, it sounds like you did no harm, because it ran the same after changing the plugs and wires.
Just don't do that again for a fuel problem.
Maybe you typed that out of context, or I'm reading it wrong? If so, sorry about that. But I wanted to highlight a possible mistake of throwing parts (the wrong ones) at a problem.
The fuel pump was probably the right move unfortunately. I say unfortunately, because the old one was probably of better quality originally than the new one. But it was still too old to do any good.
I think you said the truck sat for years? If so, most fuel pumps die on the vine. Some will actually work again for a little bit, but will still fail in short order. So a new one was in order.
Not 100% sure about soaking the carb without opening it up though. Maybe not an issue...
Do you mean that you sprayed it down good with cleaner? Or that you removed it and dunked it in a tank of cleaner?
Just curious...
Speaking of which, are you trying to run this on 40 year old gas? Or is it new gas in the tank, or whatever container you're pulling from?
You might try pulling some of those new plugs to see if they're sooted up or whatever.
When you say you have spark at all cylinders, was this tested with a timing light, or by pulling the wires? Or by pulling the plugs?
Good luck! Stay warm!
