Generator iD

Trying to identify the generator and regulator on '61 F250 223. Book shows 2 different FoMoCo generators for each of the 30 & 40 amp systems. I see that the generator brush-end plate is marked FoMoCo but I don't see any other numbers. Also nothing on the regulator. I suspect that it's a 30 amp system since there is no AC, but I'm looking for something definitive (ain't I always?). Was there a number stamp, label, or stenciling on these? Maybe removal is necessary to see a hidden marking?

As I recall the generators were mostly black and they used either a yellow (more common to me) or white stamping on the case for identification.

Just to give an idea of what it sort of looked like here's a couple of later aluminum housed alternators. Typically stamped in either a black or red.

The stamp didn't always last very long. Any gas or oil that got on it would start the process.

Regulator covers were either painted which was common for FoMoCo and AutoLite brand or raised embossed characters which was very common for the Leece-Neville brand used on the higher amperage systems.

I was afraid of that. I ran into that on the starter but was hoping for better. I guess I'll have to try measuring the max output (if it'll work) and hoping that it will at least lead me to the correct amperage system. From there I'll have to try to match the generator to one of the 2 possibles. I wonder how specific each will be to application, how interchangeable they might be. I guess I could order all 4 generators and see how many will bolt on...NOT.

Hmm. Maybe a parts comparison of each one will find a difference I can see and then identify with the parts catalog. That sounds like fun.

Might be easier with the regulator. Perhaps a size difference? Looks like this one has been replaced so not much telling. It has NO markings.

So I thought there were 4 possible generator replacement numbers but turns out that the numbers had been combined and superseded into 2 numbers. That was my own fault.
As far as determining the amperage of the systems, for those interested, I found that the generator through bolts are different sizes:
30A generator uses 1/4"-20x6.56".
40A generator uses 1/4"-20x7.36".
That's a little better than 3/4" difference, which makes for an easy ID.
