Has anyone installed a fuel filter on the return line to prevent metal from a bad cp4 pump from contaminating the entire system? Pros/Cons, reasons why it can't be done or is not effective?

before you can put in a return filter , you have to split the existing serial path the fuel is taking. The fuel goes thru the cp4 and directly into the injectors . Fuel returns from the fuel rail based on what the injectors do not use. So in this detail approach..a return filter is too late since the injectors got clobbered.
the s&S DPK will split the fuel path before it goes to the cp4. This allows fuel to go thru the cp4, then to a return filter …instead of going to the injectors as in the case of oem setup.
the split path provides the injectors clean fuel that does not first passs thru the cp4 roller bearings and cams.

Yes... the S&S Gen 2 kit referenced below... it's more than just a filter as it has a bypass block to change the flow of fuel in that the pump always receives fresh filtered fuel from the secondary filter that goes to the injectors and the return line goes through the long hose that has a tee fitting in it, so any contamination from a failed CP4 goes to the filter preventing debris back to the tank...
