Fuel pump issues

Hey guys got a good one for you today and looking to see if anyone else has had this issue. The truck is an 89 f250 with the 460 and dual tanks it’s been perfect for me since I got it as I’m the second owner and it’s got low miles. However in the recent cold if it gets down to 30 degrees or so it just cranks and won’t start. I narrowed it down to fuel and realized that I can’t hear the fuel pumps priming for the two seconds when I hit the key. The relay is clicking and everything but it’s not getting power back there to either tank I’ve tried both. Sometimes if I cycle the key a handful of times I can hear it prime and then all is good but it only works maybe half the time. After it warms up a bit outside if I go back to it it’ll fire up like nothings wrong anyone got any ideas?

Your fuel selector valve/reservoir is responsible for providing power to your pumps. Its semi-common for these units to not complete the circuit and send voltage to the pump. You can try cycling your fuel tank switch a few times with the ignition on to see if the valve will move enough to make contact.

If it's a bad relay, you can swap the horn relay for your fuel pump relay and see if that fixes the problem.

It could also be just bad fuel pumps.

For testing, You can hook up a jumper wire like this. It'll force the fuel pumps on any time the ignition is in 'run'. Then you can jiggle switches and connector and maybe find the problem.

The fuel tank selector valve is hydraulic, not electrically operated.

Both your ECM relay and your fuel pump relay need to close. I would look at the fuel pump relay. Maybe you're hearing the ECM relay.

Yep. I'm confusing the diesel fuel system and the fuel level indicator.

I can feel the fuel pump relay clicking when I turn the key but it’s only when it’s cold out that I don’t get power I’ll have to wait till it does it again to investigate further thanks for your ideas

Your fuel pump power goes through the selector switch
Test power at each in tank pump connector and work backwards to the tank selector and inertia switch
Both in tank pumps should have not failed at once
The frame pump needs to be looked at, inspect the wiring closely (the wires break off from the connectors)
I would suspect the crossover valve if all 3 of the fuel pumps are running normally
