I have been losing power steering fluid for a bit now. It seemed to be while the truck was not in use, and just a little bit. Had a shop look at it while they were doing an oil change and brake work. They said it needed a new pump and high pressure line, and wanted to charge somewhere around $500-600 in labor, which I said I'd think about. The leak ended up worsening significantly from adding fluid every several weeks to just about every start, so I decided to tackle it myself since YouTube made it look doable. What a pain lol. Anyways, I got the old pump out and the high pressure line. I am going to go ahead and replace the return lines too and just have it all fresh since it's going to be as open as it is. The point of this post is to share that there were only two bolts holding my pump on, driver side front of engine, and passenger side rear of engine with a stud that a wire was clipped onto. I have read that usually there are 3 bolts, and some have 4 in use, but the 4th is not needed. Do I need to locate a 3rd bolt to put on the driver side rear (since I want to avoid the one that sneaks by the high pressure line)? Has anyone else seen this, or did I loose a bolt at some point. No idea of the pump is original, I bought the truck with 197,000 miles and now it has 368k.
Also, is there a way to flush the system well once I put it together? I am think I mixed fluids, being ignorant and not knowing the this system actually uses ATF and not power steering fluid, so when I was adding fluid, I was adding generic power steering fluid from Murdochs, which may have led to my leak worsening. I am afraid there will be bad fluid in the rack-n-pinion, but I am unfamiliar with all this. Hoping to get to finishing this up tomorrow, mostly anyways. Have to wait for oil and oil filter to show up early next week before I can start it up.
