I have a 1979 F150 4x4 - When I first bought it last year the adjusting nut came loose and allowed some of the power steering fluid to leak out. Since I was in the back woods and didn't have any spare fluid I had to run it low of fluid. It seamed to be working fine but I notied a wine in the pump. I lived with it for a while until an intermitant locking when turning right started. Since there was a noticeable wine in the pump I replaced it first. I flushed the system with Power steering fluid and test drove. Still have the locking at times turning left so I replaced the gear box. I Bleed the system the same way as the pump - when through 4 quarts of PSF and now the system does not work at all. I do see bubbles in the system but I have jacked up the front end and rotated the steering wheel back and forth at least 50 times - still no changed - it's like my front tires are locked solid. There is no steering at all unless the truck is moving and then you have to be MR America to turn it. I have read on some of the other forums that they recomend Type F ATF instead of PSF - I bought it through Autozone and PSF is what they recomended. The Oil is clean but foamy. I would like to drive it to get the air out but thats not a safe thing to do. HELP!!!
Bleeding the power steering system take about 1 hour to 2 hour of labor.
Make sure not to start the engine if the power steering fluid has air in fluid.
The pump and steering unit are ruined. Flush the lines, then replace them both, add a return line filter into the system, and flush the lines again. Broken, ground up pieces of gears and bearings are what caused the pump to start making noise and is causing the lockups. It is very dangerous to drive in this condition. Use the transmission line cleaner/flush available at parts stores for the PS lines, or just replace them. Don't bother trying to flush the old pump and PS unit, they are trash.
