10R140 Question

Hey everyone.

This is a legitimate question, really. I am a current Superduty owner, looking to get into a 2020-22 probably with a 7.3. I have been hearing from different sources that there are some issues with the 10 speed trans. Have you all noticed any more issues with these units that is more than normal?

Want to get rid of my 2015 while its still worth something.

They're hit and miss. Some people love em some people can't stand them and think we should go back to a 6spd.

Many threads on here about 10R quirks, did you search?
Most issues are software related and updates have fixed them.
Mine has had, I believe, 3 update re-flashes related to the trans, buttery smooth now.

I would say there are more issues than what there should be and more issues than the last gen 6spd. My 2022 7.3 was pretty butter smooth, my 2023 is a little on the aggressive side but i like it for the most part. For me it was worth the risk because there are potential issues with all the brands but the 7.3 10spd combo has unmatched capability compared to competitor gassers. I would take a nice long test drive and make sure you feel at home with the truck before you buy. I've heard of far less complaints on the 23+ trucks trans but more complaints with the new 23+ tech. They got rid of skip shift for 23-24'. This makes the trans feel a little more bold/aggressive/in your face but also gets rid of the skip shift awkwardness and lag that is the source of alot of complaints from 20-22' trucks. I'm also a fan of the 3.73 and 4.30 trucks. I find the 3.55s can make the 7.3 feel a little lazy and that's the most common 20-22' 7.3 gearing available. 3.55 gears were removed for 23+ 7.3 trucks.

Thanks for the info. I can learn the habits of a 10 speed. My question was more related to what a few dealer mechanics have described as shift issues related to shaft seals and faulty valve bodies, even catastrophic failures But, you can't believe everything you see on youtube....

In my F450, no issues, no updates and I really like it.

Great downshifting when towing and very aggressive with the engine brake which I need. Still on my original brakes at 60K.

Mine is a 2021.

I'm now on my 3rd 7.3/10 speed. Granted, I didn't rack up a million miles on them. 22k on the first and 24k on the other that was just traded this week for a new leftover 23. But I've yet to see a problem.
After having had three 6.2/6 speed trucks I can say that I would not be interested in going back to one. I had no problems with those either. It's just more enjoyable to me on my annual vacation to not have a truck that screams in the hills when pulling a 7x14 enclosed trailer with 3 motorcycles, luggage, tools, etc.

People can't learn how to drive a 10spd truck. It's not to be driven like a sedan. Hit the pedal, it works. Don't be playing around, don't flutter foot the pedal.

I think you are spot on! Until you made the comment about flutter foot the pedal. I didn't even realize I've been doing this with my 4 and 6 speed transmission. With my 10 speed, I don't even worry about what gear it's in and just drive it. The transmission just does its thing.

There seem to be two main mechanical problems with the early 10R140 at least one of which was corrected sometime in 2021. The CDF drum bushing slip was the issue that was corrected and the valve body leaking. issues to my knowledge were not. Also regarding software issues, some seem to have been corrected on newer models with the no gear skipping.

Cool, I was looking around for a low mileage 19-22, but I'll narrow my search to just 21 and 22 models.

I would go 22 as information is a little scarce as to exactly when in 21 the change was made.

IMO and reading the tea leaves; I think the 10R140 has proven to be a reliable transmission and a stellar performer for towing. Complaints fall into two catagories; 1) actual problems/failures which have been relatively rare and less common since their introduction and 2) complaints about how they work and/or how they shift. .....I think most of these types of complaints are what we call in my industry "unrealistic customer expectations" LOL. ....they don't behave like a 6 spd and aren't a performance transmission in a sportscar. Many don't like the gear skipping, etc. but I find that if you treat it like a HD truck and not a sportscar, the tranny works very well and is exceptional when towing - I'm very happy with the two I have.

Cheers,
Dave
