I bought a 1986 crew cab dually 6.9 IDI. Put a new fuel pump and clutch in it. Brake lights didn't work and I found some burnt wires under the dash. Next thing I know I have the interior ripped out and now I'm committed to a frame off resto. I still want it to be a driver and a show piece.
Should I clean up the firewall and paint the engine bay matching brown or reinstall the rubber insulation on the firewall? Keep in mind I will be spraying the interior with Lizard Skin sound/temp insulation.
It depends on how bad the engine bay looks and how far you going to pull it apart?
My cab was off the frame sitting on horses so it was nothing to paint the engine bay firewall.
Well I had to paint it as I replaced half with an AC firewall so I could have factory AC in my truck.
I also had the fenders off so it was easy to paint the inside of them also.
Before I installed the hood I painted the under side of it and the motor was cleaned up, gaskets changed and it was painted too.
As for inside after I replaced the floors, rockers, part of the door posts I used seam sealer on all the seams top & bottom 2 coats and then did 2 coats of roll on bed liner top & bottom. I reused the firewall pad on the inside and if I was you I would also use the pad on the inside.
I dont care how much stuff you spray on the floor and firewall the pad will only help on sound and heat.

I voted paint. I painted some of my engine compartment as needed. OEM was black so that made it easy to match. Prepped and painted any spot that needed it.
I guess I need to research that since I wanna install factory A/C, too.
Replacing the firewall is not easy if you don't have body working skills and the tools.
There is a easier way to add factory AC so when ready post up.
