I have a 1994 Ford Ranger 4.0L which runs very poorly. When the ignition is turned on the fuel pump continuously pumps. I first believed it was a fuel leak, so I traced the whole line all the way to the fuel rail. and there was no leak. But it sounds like the number two injector is stuck open. So I purchased a new set of injectors, and it still sounds like the number two injector is still stuck open. Just wondering if anyone would know what would be causing a new injector to be stuck open.
An injector stuck open won't sound like anything because it's a solenoid that isn't moving, but if it was then the cylinder and eventually the crankcase would fill with raw gas and the oil would smell and be diluted. Do you have that condition? If not forget about the stuck injector theory.
On F series trucks of this vintage a fuel pump that runs constantly before the engine is started is either due to a stuck fuel pump relay or a short in the PCM.. which usually requires a new relay or a replacement PCM.
Lets think about this some more. At key on, the fuel injectors have B+ to them all the time. The engine computer uses the cam sensor to tell it when & the O2 & MAF sensor input for how long a time to ground switch a fuel injector to have it squirt the right amount of fuel into a cylinder. SO, if the injectors load / ground lead to the computer is shorted to ground, or its computer ground switching driver is bad & internally shorted to ground, the fuel injectors pintle will be open & passing fuel into its cylinder any time the ignition switch is in the run position & there is fuel pressure.
As has been said this can cause all sorts of problems from cylinder wash-down, cylinder hydro-lock, crankcase oil fuel dilution, cat converter over-heating, etc. Thus this needs to be sorted out without delay. More thoughts for pondering, let us know what you find.
